Chosen as the 2020 QEST (Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust) Sanderson Design Co. Inspired by nature’s peaceful pleasures in contrast to the chaos of London in lockdown her design draws on the joys of springtime buds early butterflies and a quiet sense of space.

Using a refined and harmonious palette of gently layered pinks, blues and yellows, Rachel’s muted scheme reveals a tranquil horizon that reaches from water to sky. A painted casein distemper ground, breathable and chalky, forms an ethereal backdrop to trailing golden laburnum clusters, which caught Rachel’s eye in the Sanderson archive. Named after the ancient Chinese art of forming miniature trees and landscapes, Penjing is a naturalistic design on a sophisticated black or elegant metallic ground.

Planted in decorative pots, the design alludes to a time when porcelain was more precious than gold.

Chinoiserie Hall is inspired by a beautifully coloured archive wallpaper called Chinese Magpie, believed to be designed by William Turner (1867-1936) and produced by Jeffrey & Co. In this iteration, intricate budgies perch on delicate branches amongst springtime blossom and neat buds.

Inspired by a wallpaper from the archive, Japanese influences feature in this surface printed design that retains a hand block printed look.

Inspired by authentic Indienne textiles, originally produced in the east and manufactured in Europe, this interpretation was designed in the Sanderson studio. Produced using transitional colourways, stylised peacocks and tropical birds perch upon well spaced branches in a range of delicate watercolour tones.

The Blueberry colourway is printed on satin and both the Gosling Yellow and Cinnabar Red colourways are on 100% linen and suitable for drapes only.

Stylised motifs of flowers and fruit are beautifully placed on this all-over cotton-linen blend fabric, adapted from a rare French textile sample dating from the 18th Century.

Originally block printed, this upholstery fabric has been reproduced in a contemporary inky blue and neutral colourway.

This sunburst patterned fabric is inspired by an original suzani document. With its finely embroidered ogee shaped trellis surrounding the central motif, Starla works wonderfully well in a contemporary setting.

The design was drawn with pen and pencil with great detail, giving the look of a modern toile wallpaper.

This realistic depiction of our favourite British birds was inspired by an 18th century painting of plants and animals. A green woodpecker, a wren, a robin, a thrush and a pair of blue tits on their nest of eggs all make their home in a modern tree of life. To complete the scene, butterflies, insects, ladybirds and various woodland berries adorn the tree.

The design is painted by watercolour in exquisitely fine detail.

Hykenham - A classic Sanderson floral from the talented hand of Kenneth Truman, produced for the first time as a wallpaper.

Truman joined Sanderson in 1939 bringing an astonishing aptitude for botanical drawing. He influenced the look and quality of floral artwork created at Sanderson’s Uxbridge studio for more than three decades.

Caverley - Based on an early 19th century hand block print and typically English in style, this wallpaper depicts charming birds perched on leafy boughs amongst generous blossom.

Hollyhocks - Add a vintage feel to any room with this iconic Sanderson floral, produced as a wallpaper for the first time. Surface printing gives a lovely 3D quality to the design’s chalky ground.
