The amount of curtain fabric you'll need depends on your window size, desired fullness and heading style. A standard rule is to allow 2 to 2.5 times the width of your track or rod for fullness, plus extra for hems and pooling if desired. For tailored advice, we recommend speaking with your curtain maker or designer.

Some curtain materials, like heavier linens, cottons or poly-blends, can be used for light upholstery projects. However, not all drapery fabrics meet the durability standards required for frequent use in upholstery. Likewise, many of our upholstery fabrics work beautifully for curtains if they drape well. When in doubt, speak to our team for personalised advice.

The best curtain fabric depends on your goals:

  • Cotton offers breathability and a crisp look, perfect for casual living areas or children’s rooms.
  • Linen creates a relaxed, natural drape that works in light-filled spaces like bedrooms or coastal homes.
  • Polyester and blends are durable and easy to maintain, making them ideal for high-traffic areas.
  • Velvet adds warmth and drama with luxurious fullness that looks amazing in formal rooms or as layered window treatments.
